My mission
is to open doors for people new to modern dance.
The connecting thread in my work is the constant effort to knit together
the edges of social dance and concert dance, traditional and modern
dance in dance events that incorporate both professional performance
and the participation of audience members of many different levels of
skill.
I use populist venues, formats and media -- such as social clubs and
dance halls, folk forms, and music video -- as the framework for challenging
movement work. By taking dance out of the traditional proscenium space
and placing it in more public and accessible spaces such as parks, gymnasiums,
clubs and community centers, my work aims to reintegrate "modern" dance
into our everyday lives and provide audiences with new ways to view
and, most importantly, participate in dance as a powerful means of creative
expression and social spirit.
