Founded in October 1966 by Bobby Seale & Huey Newton. In October 1967, Huey Newton was arrested and sent to prison on murder charges. The leadership fell to Seale and Eldridge Cleaver, a former prison acivist and Malcom X follower. In February 1968, fromer SNCC leader Stokely Carmichael challenged Cleaver's role as the dominant spokesman of the party. Carmichaels Pan-Africanism perspective emphasized racial unity and contrasted strongly with the desire of other Panther leaders to emphasize class struggle and to attract white leftist support. |
